About Buriram

Buriram is a small town in Isan, the rural northeastern region of Thailand. Isan is the largest and most populated part of the country, yet also the least visited by tourists. Many of Bangkok’s street vendors, tuk-tuk, and taxi drivers come from this region, and some of Thailand’s most famous dishes, such as papaya salad (som tam), originated here.

For most travelers, a short stay of one or two nights is enough to take in Buriram’s main highlights. The top attraction is the Phanom Rung Historical Park, the most important Khmer temple complex in Thailand, built over 1,000 years ago. We also highly recommend visiting Prasat Hin Meuang Tam, another ancient Khmer temple of great significance and beauty.

If you happen to be in Buriram on a weekend, don’t miss a football match at Buriram FC Stadium, the most modern in the country. Afterwards, stroll through the lively Walking Street night market, where you can enjoy local snacks, crafts, and the friendly, laid-back atmosphere.

Unlike Thailand’s busy tourist hubs, Buriram remains relatively untouched by mass tourism. Locals are genuinely curious and welcoming - don’t be surprised if students approach you to practice English or ask for a selfie. This is one of the few places where the “Land of Smiles” slogan feels absolutely true.

Getting around Buriram province can be a challenge due to its limited public transport system. The best option is to rent a car or motorbike, as the roads are good and traffic is light. This makes it easy to explore the temples and countryside at your own pace.
